A disciple of
world's master musician Hariprasad Chausaria, Deepak Ram is one
of the world's leading performers of the Indian flute, the bansuri.
A native of South Africa, Ram became a Bay Area resident last year
by way of London, and currently resides and teaches at Mt. Madonna.
He has three CDs on the British M.E.L.T. label, "Flute for Thought:
and "Searching for Satyam," which won the South African equivalent
of the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Recording. Dave Brubeck wrote
of Ram, "[he is] pointing the way to a world music, that fuses other
cultures to jazz, while keeping a respect for both traditions."
He has been hailed "an artist in the real sense of the word" by
Blues and Soul of London. An extraordinary musician, Ram is an equally
effective educator, as warm and charming as he is talented.
