Ann Dyer Trio Lecture/Demo

Ann Dyer and her band present a brief concert exemplifying their highly collaborative, personalized sound, followed by a question and answer session. A great opportunity for young musicians to receive inspiration and to discuss the nuts and bolts of making music. Questions on creativity, technique, collaboration - or whatever else may be on student's mind - can be asked of all three of the artists.

The following topics may be presented as workshops, residencies or courses:

Three Dimensional Singing

Designed to increase the breadth, depth and heights of vocal performance. Students learn how to get "off the page" and develop a powerful, personal expression. Issues of freeing one's true voice, breaking the confines of musical habits, discovering your range of expression, deepening your interpretation, and establishing artistic intent are covered. Participants should come prepared to sing a song from memory and provide a chart in their key. Singers only. Accompaniment provided.

Developing Your Artistry

Instrumentalists and singers alike yearn to "create their own sound," but that is easier said than done. Developing Your Artistry is an illuminating, inspiring and pragmatic workshop for musicians ready to explore their role as an artist while honing their craft. Students are given ways to begin shaping their musical expression into something uniquely personal. The challenges of moving through the continuum of imitation to interpretation to innovation are discussed. Artistic nature, intention, motivation, and process are explored. Vocalists, instrumentalists and non-musicians welcome.

Nada Brahma: The Sound of Yoga

Taught in conjunction with Hindustani bansuri master Deepak Ram, Nada Brahma is an introduction to the Indian philosophy and practice of sound as a way to perceive our union with the Divine. Covers the metaphysical nature of sound, the meaning of OM, the essential power of tone and rhythm, the significance of mantra, the relationship between sound and breath, and the use of silence and sound as a means to open the body/mind. Participants should wear comfortable clothes appropriate for meditation. Vocalists, instrumentalists, and non-musicians welcome.

Introduction to Self-Management

This workshop addresses the often daunting issue of self-management - from identifying the basic areas of music career management (e.g., performance, recording, promotion) to addressing the psychological roadblocks. Setting a course, defining career objectives, identifying priorities and time management are addressed. The 1-2-3's of self promotion, including mailing list maintenance, mailer production, publicity, and grassroots marketing are discussed. Students are given the top ten most essential and inexpensive things one can do to promote an event/cd. Promotional packages may be brought in for review. Vocalists, instrumentalists, and non-musicians welcome.

Art of the Rhythm Session

Bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis, the pre-eminent rhythm section of the San Francisco Bay Area, conduct this hands-on workshop for all instrumentalists to practice rhythm section/soloist/group interaction. The class will emphasize the supportive role of the rhythm section and stress listening and interplay with the soloist. Instrumentalists and vocalists welcome.
